I live in Cape Town have just read Viking Fire, which I chanced upon after reading a Harry Sidebottom (and deciding not another one of those) and one of Ben Kane's (that worthy rugger bugger.) Scratching around because I have read every Robert Harris and every CJ Sansom and was looking for something on a par with these. I found it in Viking Fire - such brilliant writing; thoughtful and absorbing. A wonderful read. Thank you.

So obviously I will read Shieldwall now.

But I'm posting this to implore you to write more medieval historical novels. Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems there has been nothing after Viking Fire?

Kind regards
Errol GrayAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14010112819523735549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584904367502353997.post-85311981469765895962015-02-13T01:00:02.300-08:002015-02-13T01:00:02.300-08:00Just happened upon this after chatting to a friend...Just happened upon this after chatting to a friend recently about Norway.
Dave used to send me poems after the accident and I am sad to say I found them too intense at the time - I wish I had kept them to read when I was older...and wiser.
An inspiring man and a sad loss.
Lovely words Justin.
ClareClarehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12111811989547852808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584904367502353997.post-6751582762248240662014-02-25T23:07:31.790-08:002014-02-25T23:07:31.790-08:00Thanks Alex: the number of comments here is testam...Thanks Alex: the number of comments here is testament to his work. I kind of hope Paul Thompson over in California knows, as, whatever their differences of technique, I think they had a lot in common, in a focused passion for what they did. Barry Daniel's loss was, as you said, something from which he never truly recovered, and I think those of us with the good fortune to be taught by him before as well as after felt the difference, even though it took time to take its toll. It's great to see him commemorated.
Alexander PackerAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09688793067111045977noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584904367502353997.post-84959794143360781892014-01-26T04:41:04.182-08:002014-01-26T04:41:04.182-08:00I was in Manor House 1978-1982 and I knew Dave Hug...I was in Manor House 1978-1982 and I knew Dave Hughes well; i'm sad to hear of his passing.

He was the kindest, softest, most generous, most caring and most encouraging person I knew all the time I was there.
I counted him as a friend. I am pleased to be selfpublished because I like to be in control of what my book contains, looks like (I hate those terrible inaccurate headless women with acronisitic clothing) and make decisions about it myself. Also, the stress of waiting for all those rejection letters really puts me off mainstream. It took me 6 years to write my book, I didn't want to wait. Get a mainstream publisher first, and that's you're stamp of approval/quality/whatever.

Then you can self-publish short stories, tie-ins, the lives of bit-characters, as a way of boosting sales for the main book. But I have to say that is really tempting to just say "screw the waiting" and get the story published in ebook form.

I like the idea of perhaps getting some short stories together and putting them on Amazon, and still go down the traditional route for the novel(s). I visited York a few years ago and purchased a used copy of Berryman's poems. On the flyleaf is "David Hughes 5/84" and on the title page the stamp of a figure of a mountain climber in blue just under the title. Tonight I googled the name and ended up here at your blog Good to know who he was. I'll confirm what's already been said, he had excellent taste in poetry. It has been a year since Dave died...Hello Justin,

It has been a year since Dave died and it has been a very difficult year to have that rattling around my head. More so because we had a falling out over the company he was keeping a couple of years before he died. He often got empassioned and irritated that I never turned my attentions to serious writing. I'd receive emails and letters nipping me to turn scripts and ideas into something more valiant and always in the most deftly managed way. He was a wonderful man in terms of his humility and his subtle power of suggestion. Nobody was flaty 'wrong' but some were 'less right' than others. He extended my reading circle and influenced my outdoor pursuits. He made me think and often made me laugh. He referred to me as 'Youth' without it being a patronising label but at the same time gently reminding me I had a lot to learn and would do so with the naive energy I had.

Sadly he was taken for granted that he would be around forever and petty arguments could be patched up at a later date. The later date sadly never came.

He is and will be very much missed.

I hope you are keeping well.

Kind regards,

Justin Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11863899445398982420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584904367502353997.post-17048323608769340942012-09-10T14:03:59.755-07:002012-09-10T14:03:59.755-07:00I'm more than half way through it by now, and ...I'm more than half way through it by now, and I just discovered to my delight that it's going to be a trillogy.
